Introduction

Have you ever had problem of not knowing your friends are? Especially when you are travel in groups, that is many of us’ problem during our past trips together. One day, one came up with the idea: How about building an app that can streamline all of group members’ location?

Once the idea has been formed, we set out to the research stage.

Research

1. Gather Data

?
A. Target market

Potential users of this app are Global travelers who are young, hi-tech and love backpacking with groups of friends. Particularly, they are ones that use Social Network as the primary means of communication (first, we will try with Facebook, the most famous Social Network).

B. Interview

After mapping out our potential users, we conduct interviews of some people whose equivalent characters to verify our theories and find out more insights.

During these interviews, I found people enjoy because they love to travel, they love exploring new places. They have to face some typical problems while going on a trip with their friends besides location sharing.

  • Managing plans (ticket numbers, activities timing and record)
  • Dividing expenses on the trip
C. Competitor Analysis

To further our learnings, we go ahead and look at available apps solving the same problems. This diagram of two key features is the result of this phase and serves as our note to set our expectations for the product.

B. Solutions
  • Allows users to push STOP notifications to their groups

  • Allows users to call their group admin

  • Enable to input details of expense and calculate final spending

  • Enable to view destinations on maps to arrange their trips.

C. Define User

Using my interviews I combined my findings to create three personas that would be typical users of Sol.

3. User Interface

A. Logo

A good logo leaves good impression at the first glance. Therefore, we also pay special attention to this section as part of creating great experience.

The negative space is one which is in the trend for its feature of giving a hint of surprise and sophistication at the same time. FedEx logo is a great example of practicing this trend, as you may notice. The sun and the mountains indicate the long journey to the wild, while the pin conveys the meaning of getting location. Mixing all those inspirations, we created the logo for Sol.

C. Prototype

We use Protopie to create an interactive design - hi-fidelity prototype in the realistic way for the benefits:

  • Allow real users to interact without coding and get our ideas validated for improvement
  • Clearly express how the application should behaves to developers
